Vernon Townsend - JOHNSON CITY

Vernon Dale Townsend, 72, 129 Rockingham Road, Johnson City, passed away Friday, November 12, 2010, at his residence.

He was a native of Banner Elk, NC, and a son of the late Fred and Gladys Norwood Townsend. Mr. Townsend was a retired Lt. Col. in the U.S. Army, having served as a Medical Specialist during the Berlin Crisis and Vietnam Era.

After retirement he had worked at North Side Hospital as an Anesthesia Nurse Supervisor.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Headrick Townsend, in 1996; and a sister, Regina Sterling.

Survivors include a daughter, Monique Rothe and her husband, Michael, of Brandon, Florida; a sister, Lolita Puterbaugh and her husband, Neal, of Boiling Springs, SC; two grandsons, Jonathan Alexander Caskey and Roland Ivan Caskey; three nephews, Michael Scott Sterling, Murfreesboro, Russell Dean Sterling, Marietta, GA, and Edward Neal Puterbaugh, Hendersonville, NC.

The funeral service for Mr. Townsend will be conducted at 7:00 PM Monday, November 15, 2010, in the Woodall-Anderson and Dugger Funeral Home with Dr. Paull Dixon officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 5:00 PM until service time.

Graveside service with full military honors will be held t 1:00 PM Tuesday, November 16, 2010, in the Roselawn Memory Gardens, Johnson City. Everyone attending is asked to meet at the cemetery by 12:50 PM for this service.

Edna Faye Townsend Henson (February 15, 1934 - September 15, 2010)
Mrs. Edna Faye Townsend Henson, age 76, of 976 Crackers Neck Road, Mountain City, a former resident of Watauga County, died Wednesday morning, September 15, 2010, at Watauga Medical Center.
Mrs. Henson was born February 15, 1934 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Enoch and Jospehine Hicks Church. She was a homemaker and a member and pianist for Rock Creek Baptist Church.
Mrs. Henson is survived by her husband, Brother Rector Henson of the home; three sons, Steve Townsend and wife Kathy of Mountain City, Danny Townsend and wife Eva of Sugar Grove, and Ronnie Townsend and wife Anna of Cape Carteret, North Carolina; two step-daughters, Judy Hawn and husband Don of Hickory, and Sue Ball and husband Kenny of Lawrenceville, Virginia; two grandsons, Joseph Townsend and wife Brittney, and Jesse Townsend, all of Trade, Tennessee; three granddaughters, Tabatha Townsend and Angie Ward, both of Vilas, and Miranda Townsend of Trade; two great-granddaughters, Savannah Ward and Autumn Ward, both of Vilas; one great-grandson, Todd Arnette of Vilas; five sisters, Anna Mae Miller, Betty Joe Lawrence, Janie Fox, Margie Brown, and Wanda Shelton, and four brothers, Charlie, Marion, Bill, and Dave Church. She is also survived by eight step-grandchildren, two step great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Junior Floyd Townsend.
Funeral services for Mrs. Edna Faye Townsend Henson will be conducted Friday afternoon, September 17, 2010, at 2:00 o'clock, at Rock Creek Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:00 until 2:00 o'clock. Officiating will be Brother Joel Cook, Brother Anthony Roark, and Brother Rick Hurley. Burial will follow in the Clark's Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening, from 6:00 until 8:00 o'clock, at Hampton Funeral Service. At other times friends may call at the home of a son, Danny and Eva Townsend, 1199 U.S. Highway 321 North, Sugar Grove.

Henry Ford Townsend
Henry Ford Townsend, age 86, of 181 Hopson Road, Johnson City, passed away at his residence on Sunday, September 12, 2010 following a brief battle with cancer. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Hobert Lee Townsend and Hattie Hodge Townsend. In addition to his parents, Ford was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Norma Fay Townsend, on November 17, 2007.Mr. Townsend was retired as a painter from the Veterans Administration, Mountain Home, TN. He served his country with the U.S. Navy during WWII from 1944-1946. Ford was an avid camper and enjoyed spending his winters in Frostproof, FL for several years following his retirement. He was of the Christian faith.

Mr. Townsend is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and Kathy Townsend, Oliver Springs, TN, John and Mitzi Townsend, and Steve and Patti Townsend, all of Johnson City; eight grandchildren, J.P. Townsend, Johnson City, Karen Townsend Majchrzak and husband, Steve, Nashville, TN, Brian Townsend of the U.S. Air Force currently stationed in Las Vegas, NV, Michael Townsend, Jonesborough, Amy Townsend Wandel and husband, Brandon, Johnson City, Becky Townsend, Johnson City, Jill Coggins and Chad Hatley, Elizabethton, and Joey Coggins and wife, Deanne, Duncan, SC: seven great-grandchildren, Hunter Townsend, Johnson City, Zack and Savannah Coggins, Elizabethton, Austin, Abby, and Josie Coggins, Duncan, SC, and Helaiyna Reyes, Elizabethton; and two brothers and three sisters-in-law, Glen and Margaret Townsend, Elizabethton, Bob and Betty Townsend, and Marcella Townsend, all of Johnson City. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service for Mr. Henry Ford Townsend will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Tuesday, September 14, 2010 in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home with Mr. Todd Wolfe, Minister, officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 5:00-7:00 P.M. prior to the service at the funeral home or at the residence other times.

The graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, September 15, 2010 in the Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Post #49 of Elizabethton.


Arthur Marion Welch
Mr. Arthur Marion Welch, age 93, of 4996 Highway 421 North, Vilas, died Saturday, September 11, 2010, at his home.Mr. Welch was born July 8, 1917 in Watauga County, a son of the late Charles Edward Welch and Maggie Baird Welch. Robert Dudley "BOBBY" Townsend, age 55, of Laurel Fork Church Road, Boone, the Aho community, died Friday evening, September 3, 2010. Robert Dudley was born April 29, 1955 in Banner Elk. He was of the Presbyterian faith. Mr. Townsend owned and operated Townsend Painting Company and enjoyed small engine repair. Bobby is survived by his wife of 38 years, Sabra Tolbert Townsend; one daughter, Ellen Jean Shook and husband, Glenn, and one son, Robert Edward Townsend and wife, Amy, all of Deep Gap; three grandchildren, Hunter and Hayla Shook and Brahm Townsend; his God-daughter, Lindsey Hicks of Boone; his parents, Robert and Ellen Townsend of Boone; three brothers, Charlie S. Townsend and wife Joanna of Gastonia, Danny Townsend and wife, Judy, of Blowing Rock and Michael Townsend of Boone; and his faithful basset hound, Ruby. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, September 7, 2010 at 2 o'clock at Laurel Fork Baptist Church, officiated by Dr. Daniel Featherstone. Agnes Townsend Calhoun (November 8, 1924 - July 24, 2010) Mrs. Agnes Townsend Calhoun, age 85, of Marion, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 24, 2010 at her residence. Agnes was born in Avery County, November 8, 1924 to the late Millard and Cora Davis Townsend. She was retired from Belk-Broome Company. Agnes was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church and will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Harvey Frank Calhoun, a brother Ted Townsend and a sister, Alma Crowder. Saddened by this loss are four children: Gail Church and husband Roger of Marion, Phyllis Murphy and husband Doug of Shelby, Frances Baker and husband Paul of Marion, Neal Calhoun and wife Lucy of Marion; two sisters: Mabel Goforth of Sevierville, TN and Elizabeth Woody and husband Frank of Spruce Pine; nine grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and soon to be fourteen; a number of nieces and nephews and a special friend and home health nurse Alice Puett. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Zion Hill Baptist Church with Dr. Tom Walker and Rev. Jimmy Upton officiating. The family will receive friends on Monday, July 26, 2010 from 5:00-7:00 PM at Westmoreland Funeral Home. Interment will be in Zion Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. July 6, 2010 Mrs. Dorothy Bentley Townsend, age 101 of Norwood Hollow Road, Banner Elk and formerly of the Dutch Creek Community died Monday night, July 5, 2010 at Life Care Center of Banner Elk. Mrs. Townsend was born in Avery County May 6, 1909. She was a homemaker and a member of Holy Cross Episcopal Church. She is survived by two daughters; Harriet Storey of Valdese and Margaret Perkins of Purlear, three grandchildren; Cynthia Trtala of Valdese, Timothy Townsend and wife Emma of Valle Crucis, and Eric Storey of Valdese, two great grandchildren; Andrew Trtala and Kassidy Townsend, and one half-sister; Ruth Wilson of Newton. She was preceded in death by her husband; Forrest Hollars Townsend, one son; Thomas Russell Townsend, three sisters; Ollie Bentley, Mary Loudermilk, and Maude Johnson, and one brother; Sherman Bentley. Funeral services for Mrs. Dorothy Bentley Townsend will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Holy Cross Episcopal Church. Officiating will be Father John Shields. Charles Townsend

Mr. Charles Dewey Townsend, 78, of Hudson passed away Wednesday, June 30, 2010, at Frye Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Townsend was born June 15, 1932, in Watauga County, to the late Fred and Ada Mann Townsend.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Senter Townsend; two sons, Ronald and Michael Townsend; a sister, Sue Caldwell; and three brothers, J.C., Lloyd and Earl Townsend.

Mr. Townsend is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law; Butch Townsend of Sawmills, Raymond and Sheila Townsend of Sawmills, Donald and Angie Townsend of Hickory, and James Alexander of California; his daughters and sons-in-law; Debra and Charles Woodard of Lenoir, and Brenda and Ralph Davis of Lenoir; his brothers and sister-in-law, Hugh and Reba Townsend of Granite Falls, and Carroll Townsend of Lenoir; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Maxine and Jack Warren of Hudson, Pat and Johnnie Greene of Hudson, and Teresa Andrews of Hudson; 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; he also is survived by numerous other relatives.

Mr. Townsend’s funeral service will be held Saturday, July 3, 2010, at 2 p.m. at Sunrise Baptist Church in Sawmills. Pastors Shawn Davis and Ed Warren will be officiating. Interment will immediately follow the service in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Billy Townsend, Nathan Davis, Jason Woodard, Jamie Woodard, Darren Townsend and Jonathan Greene.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m., prior to the service at Sunrise Baptist Church.

Mrs. Ruby Margaret Hodges Bentley, born on September 9, 1914, passed away on June 20, 2010 at the Life Care Center of Banner Elk. She was the oldest of 13 children born to the late Leonard and Rosa Townsend Hodges of Valle Crucis. A native of Watauga County, Ruby lived most of her life in Banner Elk. She was a homemaker and gardener, and was generous in sharing her bounty. In her spare time, she loved to do quilting and craftwork and has shared much of her beautiful handiwork with family and friends. Even after moving to assisted living facilities, she continued to make pretty things and share them with other residents. She was a member of the Mount Calvary Baptist Church while living in Banner Elk but later attended the Chesterfield Church of Christ in Morganton and the Banner Elk Church of Christ in Banner Elk. She is survived by her two children: son Clayton Bentley and wife, Pat, of Banner Elk; daughter Myrtle Bentley Laws and her husband Dennis of Morganton; three sisters, Clara Baird of Palm Harbor, Florida; Anne Baird of Hillsboro, Ohio; Lucille Shook of Newland; five brothers, Dave Hodges of Salisbury, NC; Reece Hodges and Russell Hodges, both of Elizabethton, TN; Herman Hodges of Salisbury; Bob Hodges of Nebo, NC, and, by four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Bentley was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, William “Ed” Bentley and an infant son, William Edward Bentley, Jr.; three sisters, Rita Mae Townsend of Banner Elk, Bessie Harrell of Valle Crucis, Ruth Easton of California; and a brother, Charles Hodges of Johnson City, TN. Funeral services for Ruby Hodges Bentley will be conducted Tuesday evening at 7:00 PM at Austin & Barnes Funeral Chapel, officiated by Rev. Delmar James and Mr. Don Iverson. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 5:30 until 7:00 PM, prior to the services, at Austin & Barnes. Graveside services and burial will be conducted Wednesday morning at 11:00 AM at Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery in Banner Elk, NC.




Homer Lee Townsend
Homer Lee Townsend, age 72, of Lenoir passed away on Saturday June 19, 2010 at Gate Way Nursing Center in Lenoir. Born November 16, 1937 in Avery County, he was the son of the late Johnny and Dovie Naomi Arnett Townsend. Homer was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Lenoir and had worked for Kincaid Furniture. He enjoyed gardening, camping and fishing. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by; two sisters, Dovie Townsend and Edith Arnett. Left to cherish his memories are: his wife, Marie Ramsey Townsend of the home; his son, Danny Townsend of Gateway; his three daughters, Kathy and Gordon Townsend, Gloria Ragalado and Janice and Dwayne Townsend all of Lenoir; one sister, Mabel Ramsey of Banner Elk; ten grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive. The family will receive friends on Monday June 21st from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home. Services will be conducted on Tuesday June 22nd at 2:00 p.m. at the Banner Elk Seventh Day Adventist Church with Pastor Charles Hindman officiating. Interment will follow in the White Rock Cemetery. Elmer Clay Greene

BURLINGTON - Elmer Clay Greene, age 79, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 30, 2010, at his home after several months of failing health.

He was born in Watauga County January 24, 1931, to the late Spencer Dewey and Sarah Isabelle Lookabill Greene and was the husband of 60 years to Clara Townsend Greene who survives.

Mr. Greene faithfully attended Ireland St. Chapel for over 60 years. He retired from Kayser-Roth Men's Finishing as a maintenance supervisor and enjoyed hunting in his spare time.

Survivors include his wife of the home; daughters, Sandra Cheryl Davis and husband, J.W. of Graham and Karen Dean and best friend Jimmy Pope of Raleigh; grandchildren, Toby Cates of Graham, Chris Overby and wife, Sandra of Clayton, NC and Glenn Cates and wife, Brandy, of Burlington; great grandchildren, Tanner Cates, Mickey Cates, Kamryn Overby, Mallory Cates and Reagan Overby; and brother, Lloyd Greene and wife, Mildred of Wilson, NC. He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Con "Pop" Graves; and sisters, Mary Preas and Hazel Graul as well as an infant sister and brother.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday, June 1, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. John Shields and the burial will follow at Alamance Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and other times at his home.

Virginia Ward Byrd, age 83, of Clark's Creek Road, Banner Elk, the Valle Crucis community, died Sunday afternoon, May 23, 2010 at her home. She was born August 11, 1926 in Watauga County to Aud and Lula Henson Ward. Mrs. Byrd was a member of Clark's Creek Baptist Church. She retired as a secretary from New River Light & Power Company. Mrs. Byrd is survived by one daughter, Mary Ellen Culler and husband Allen, and her grandson, Kevin Greene, all of Valle Crucis; one sister, Mary Louise McGuire of Wilkesboro; a number of nieces and nephews; and her special friend and caregiver, Kelly Guy of Valle Crucis. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Wade Byrd, and four brothers, Tom, Gilbert, Clint, and Hugh Ward. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, May 26th at 2 o'clock at Clark's Creek Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Bill Warren, Rev. Mike Townsend and Rev. Carter Moretz. TOWNSEND FAMILY REUNION

The annual Townsend Family Reunion is scheduled for 25 July 2010. It will be held at the Holy Communion Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall. We cordially invite anyone related to the family to attend. Helen Townsend Coffey (January 3, 1931 - April 22, 2010)

Mrs. Helen Townsend Coffey, age 79, of 1462 Sampson Road, Boone, died Thursday, April 22, 2010, at Watauga Medical Center.
Mrs. Coffey was born January 3, 1931 in Avery County, a daughter of the late Lonnie and Blanche Townsend. She was a homemaker and a member Boone Baptist Church.
Mrs. Coffey is survived by two daughters, Ruby Winebarger and husband John of Lenoir, and Bonnie May and husband Mike of Boone; five sons, Jesse J. Coffey and wife Opal of Lenoir, Howard Coffey and wife Brenda of Boone, Lonnie Coffey and wife Linda of Mountain City, Tennessee, Harley Coffey and wife Laura, and Daniel Coffey and wife Edith, all of Boone; three sisters, Vanda Townsend, Peggy Minton, and Pansey Phillips, all of Lenoir; four brothers, John Townsend, Gaylord Townsend, Deck Townsend, and Henry Townsend, all of Lenoir, and one son-in-law, Rick Huffman of Boone. She is also survived by 24 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, 2 great great-grandchildren, several step-grandchildren, and a number nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John William Coffey; one daughter, Verlene Huffman; two infant daughters; one granddaughter, Diana Coffey; three sisters, Rosie Andrews, Wilma Minton, and Lena Watson, and four brothers, Albert, Larkin, Spencer, and Frank Townsend.
Funeral services for Mrs. Helen Townsend Coffey will be conducted Monday afternoon, April 26, 2010, at 2:00 o'clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. Larry Dean Rainbolt


Mr. Larry Dean Rainbolt, age 57, of Hampton, walked into heaven Monday, March 1, 2010 from Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following an extended illness. Mr. Rainbolt was a native of Carter County and a son of Robert John “Tub” Rainbolt of Hampton and the late Christine Whitehead Rainbolt. He was a graduate of Hampton High School, attended Beck Mountain Baptist Church and had worked as a truck driver.

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by one brother: Richard Len Rainbolt.

Mr. Rainbolt is survived by a son and daughter-in-law: Larry Daniel and Kelly Rainbolt, Roan Mountain, one daughter: Michelle Lynn Rainbolt Peterson, Elizabethton, a special granddaughter, Addison Lane Rainbolt, Roan Mountain and five other grandchildren; Michael, Hannah, Phillip, Emily and Gracie; six sisters and five brothers-in-law: Phyllis and Rev. Ronnie Campbell, Hampton, Shirley and James Greer, Kingsport, Betsy and Nick Simerly, Hampton, Thelma and Jeff Simerly, Roan Mountain, Christy Rainbolt, Orlando FL, Amanda and Jamie Baker, Elizabethton, two brothers and one sister-in-law: Robert John Rainbolt, Lester and Lisa Rainbolt, all of Hampton, his caregiver, Carrie and special friend, Mike Harrell, Hampton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The Celebration of Life service for Mr. Rainbolt will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 3rd in the Tetrick Funeral Home Chapel of Peace with Rev. Ronnie Campbell officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel prior to the service. Friends may also call at the residence of his father, Robert John “Tub” Rainbolt.

The family would like to extend a special “thank you” to the staff of the 5500 wing of Johnson City Medical Center Hospital for the care given to Mr. Rainbolt during his illness.

JAMES EDWARD TOWNSEND, 42, of Hudson passed away Friday, February 26, 2010 at Caldwell Memorial Hospital.Mr. Townsend was born in Caldwell County to the late Wilburn Eugene Townsend and his mother Annie Pauline Rash of Taylorsville. Mr. Townsend was a tree farmer.James is also survived by his wife Melinda Smith Townsend of the home, two daughters; Ashley Townsend of the home and Amanda Townsend of the home, one granddaughter, two brothers; Terry Townsend of Lenoir and Douglas Townsend of Granite Falls. Mrs. Townsend was born Aug. 1, 1946, in Avery County to the late Conley Hicks and Libby Guinn Hicks. She was a member of Holy Communion Lutheran Church and Lutheran Church Women's Organization. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Ray, Elmer and Johnny Hicks, and her sisters, Patsy Morgan, Elizabeth Townsend and Imogene Hicks. Survivors include her husband, Glenn E. Townsend of the home; her sons, David Allen Townsend and wife, Sabrina, and Ricky Scott Townsend and wife, Cindy, all of Lenoir; her daughter, Glenda Keller and husband, Gregory, of Chesapeake, Va.; her grandchildren, Sarah Laney, Jessica Townsend, Rachel Laney, Rebecca Laney, Tyler Townsend, Aaron Townsend and Lindsey Townsend; and her sisters, Verna Mae Schoof of Carlton, Ore., and Rosalee Berry of Roan Mountain, Tenn.
